Fiberglass Insulation
Fiberglass is typically called a polymer. It is not a glass as the name indicates. Polymer is tougher. The polymer structure is mixed in fiberglass with very fine glass fibers. It makes fiberglass tougher than ordinary plastic; and less brittle and lighter than glass.Glass and plastic have their own properties individually. But by mixing those in form of polymer and glass fibers, a better combination is formed which can be used for many purposes. Fiberglass has many applications both domestic and industrial.
Fiberglass can trap millions and millions of air bubbles. Due to this characteristic, it serves as a good insulator. Fiberglass contains fine fibers of glass which are intertwined. It makes fiberglass enable to trap millions and millions of particles inside it making it thus a good insulator. Fiberglass blanket insulation is very common. Installing fiberglass insulation is very easy. A do-it-yourself kit is offered by some dealers. The installation is very easy with the help of this kit.
Fiberglass insulation is used in buildings where there is not much space for insulation. The R-value should be 15 for good fiberglass batt insulation. It should have a dimension of 2 x 4. R-value is 13 of moderately denser batt insulation.
Although, the installation of fiberglass is not difficult or complex, yet you need to be careful. Safety measures should be adopted. Skin contact should be avoided. You should wear a face mask to protect yourself from the fine fibers because inhaling these fine fibers can cause severe lung problems. Do adopt safety measures to save yourself from potential and serious health hazards.
Fiberglass is a cheap material. It is a good thermal conductor. It is often used in household for insulating attic. It has other domestic applications as well. It can be used for insulating garage and basement. Fiberglass insulation is commonly used in wrapping the ducts in HVAC system. HVAC prefer to use it due to its properties of good thermal conductivity and moisture absorber.
Another approach in fiberglass insulation is blow in fiberglass insulation. In fiberglass blow in insulation, a machine blower is used to fill in close cavities and spaces. Glass is often melted for this purpose and is woven into fiber. Blow fiberglass insulation is loose-fill insulation.
The blown fiberglass insulation is mostly used for two applications. These applications include the open-blow method and the closed cavity method or usage. An instance of the open-blow usage is the insulation of the attic space. The insulation of wall interior and floor are examples of the closed cavity usage.
Another approach in fiberglass insulation is known as blown-in-fiberglass blanket insulation method. This method is better than other blown in fiberglass insulation methods. This method is also called BIB. It functions like cellulose white spraying. Latex adhesive is added to the material used in this method. It is treated with humidity and a glue-like substance is formed. Then, it is blown in the wall cavities during fiberglass wall insulation. There are also other approaches in fiberglass insulation such as fiberglass pipe insulation, silicone rubber coated fiberglass insulation sleeving, fiberglass insulation water damage, etc.
The price or cost of fiberglass insulation is lesser than other types of insulations. The use of innovations in fiberglass and modern technology has made it more preferable than others.
